The History of Lavender

According to the University of Wisconsin, Lavender has many health benefits.

Lavender is recognized around the globe for its fresh and heady fragrance. The lavender plant, a flowering evergreen shrub native to the Mediterranean region, has a long history of herbal healing.

Romans scented their baths with it. The Tibetans made an edible lavender butter to use as part of a traditional treatment for nervous disorders.

Today, the essential oil of lavender is widely used across Europe—both topically and internally—for a host of ailments, from anxiety to sunburn.

In the past several decades, researchers have put the lavender flower and its extracts under the microscope with exciting results. The lavender extract is being studied for preventing and treating various cancers.

Specifically, lavender has been recognized as the remedy for restlessness and difficulty sleeping. Lavender can slow the central nervous system, calm motor activity, counter the stimulant effect of caffeine, and boost the narcotic effects of certain drugs.

A study done by the University of Miami in 1998 found that after 3 minutes of treatment with lavender therapy, participants appeared drowsier, less depressed, and more relaxed.

This aroma therapy bag was designed to help a client deal with the side effects of cancer treatment. She used the bag to help deal with the stress and vomiting she was experiencing from cancer treatment. She then discovered by heating the bag it also helped relieve muscle pain and therefore she slept better and woke more refreshed.
