With all the bad press on new medications in the news today, many people are returning to holistic medicine and treatments. One of the biggest currently being used for treatment and for mood improvement is aromatherapy.
Aromatherapy is using essential oils from plants to produce positive changes in the body or mind. Essential oils are not the same as perfumes or colognes. Perfumes and colognes are man-made artificial scents and not actual plant oils. They may smell similar, but the effect on the body is completely different. The sense of smell can trigger some of the strongest memories and mental or physical changes without the dangerous side effects that could be suffered from prescription medications.
One of the many techniques of aromatherapy is the use of wraps to treat poor circulation. Circulation problems occur when there is limited blood flow to the extremities: arms, legs, hands and feet. Circulation problems can arise at any point in life but are typically seen in the elderly, smokers and people that are overweight or suffering from heart trouble. They may have a weak heart that does not pump the blood sufficiently or possibly blocked arteries from fatty buildup. Aromatherapy wraps can help relieve this condition by using heat and essential oils to increase the circulation to the affected area.
By using a combination of essential oils like Geranium and Eucalyptus and heat, the wrap is wound firmly around the body allowing the pores to open and encouraging the blood to go the treated areas thereby improving circulation. While much depends on the cause of poor circulation, the patient's overall health and any medications they may be on, aromatherapy may provide the needed relief patients have been seeking.
